Edward J. Herter III died July 4 in Fitchburg, MA, USA, at age 73. He and his wife of 49 years, Gail Archer Herter, lived for most of their lives in northern New Jersey. Well known in the printing and converting industry in the Northeast USA, Ed Herter was an exuberant and compassionate man who enjoyed networking with newcomers and old-timers, students and CEOs. He was in the graphics arts and printing industry for more than 40 years, working in a variety of sales and management roles for such companies as Borden Chemical, Lewis Roberts, Rollcut, Gotham Ink, Superior Printing Ink, Flexi Printing Plate and Tek Graphics. Most recently, he was self-employed as president of Ramapo Graphics, Herter Associates and Clean Impressions. He was an adjunct college professor and taught marketing, management and social issues, as well as group and organizational dynamics and diversity for Mt. Wachusett Community College in Massachusetts, Nyack College in New York, and Ramapo College and Felician College in New Jersey. He was a past board member of the Tag and Label Manufacturing Institute, one of four founding members of the North East Label Manufacturers Association (NELMA), and had been a member of Delta Mu Delta (International Business Honor Society), LeTip International, Rotary International, and the JayCees. He acquired his real estate broker license in recent years, had is own radio show in Massachusetts, and was active in the Fitchburg Business Networking Group, the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, and the Wachusett Chamber of Commerce. Herter held degrees from Bergen Community College, Ramapo College and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Michael Herter, his daughter, Michelle McGivney, their spouses, and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 18 at 2 p.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, MA. Burial will be private, and there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Attn: Gardner Relay for Life, 350 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01604.
